If you do play random public games, I strongly suggest making a back up of your save folder (the entire thing, including the Profile.bin file) before joining any public game. There is a thriving community that plays the BL games (in co-op mode) but they do tend to be friends, rather than random public games. If you don't want to use any cheats, I strongly suggest getting some friends who feel the same way you do, and playing invite only games with them. There are also lots of people who don't like to play using that stuff.
